Texts

I was born in the west of Ireland in the second half of the twentieth century, and in the forty odd years since then I've lived in Dublin, Seattle, Mexico and now Catalunya.
The most succinct description that I can make of my work is that I'm searching for grace with an understanding that it surrounds us at all times if we can but open up to it. When my work stops someone and gives them space to slow down and accept that grace, then I'm happy.
That said, i'm more interested nowadays in making groups of images - essays, books, slideshows and so forth. The majority of what you'll find on this site is in that format. It's my aim that by means of juxtaposition and accumulation of images something richer and more long-lasting is created. There's nothing revolutionary about this, it's the model from Robert Frank's "The Americans" to Broomberg and Chanarin's "Fig.". Before that it's there in Sander or in Curtis, too, I guess.
The funny thing is we live in a culture in which this is actually quite an unusual way to look at photographs - people are much more attuned to looking at individual images and looking for big striking images. So that's why i mention it, really.
The other thing i'm trying to do is make the work richer within the frame too - one of the reasons i have this site is to show the work at a larger scale than Flickr, Facebook and so forth because a lot of what i'm trying to do now just isn't visible at all on the scale of these venues. So for that reason i really encourage you to look at the works fullscreen (there's a little button for it at the bottom left of the page). The images won't take any longer to load and hopefully they'll look a lot better.

That's all, thanks for visiting!
